Boys Room

Posted by AFarmhouseFull on March 3, 2012 at 5:20 AM

The boys room is finally done!  Actually it has been done for a while I just haven't taken the time to blog about it.  Bear with me because all the photos I (lazily) took with my iphone! Anyway, lets start the tour!

Side note: Although I wasn't really meaning to "theme" the room it ended up being a funky, ecletic, colorful lodge. Perfect for the boys!

This is AJ's dresser.  This dresser was being tossed out a few years ago and was in perfectly workable condition.  We coated with some paint and added new hardware.  All the photos on the wall are ones that were taken at the cabin; a favorite place for my kids!  I plan on putting fish in the tank, I just haven't gotten around to it.

These were inspired by Pinterest and were super cheap to re-create. The 11x14 (or maybe there were 16x20?) canvas I got for $3-4 a piece.  Two bottles of craft paint (one aqua and one dark brown) and I had some custom art pieces.  For the silhouette, I found some photos of deer and bears online, blew them up to size and cut them out.....instant silhouette. Traced around it and that is how ya do it!

The boys each received a new down alternative comforter in brown/tan from Kohls for Christmas.  I got them 50% off on sale and used another Kohl's coupon for an additional 20% off.  GREAT DEAL!  The sheets we got after Christmas on sale with a gift card we received.  The "custom artwork" hangs above their beds and the book shelf is actually made from a (FREE) oak pallet that was cut down, sanded and polyurethaned. YEAH FOR FREE!!!  These are SUPER heavy - attach to studs!!!

This is Michael's dresser.  It was a $60 unfinished dresser we purchased for AJ YEARS ago.  We painted it to match and added similar hardware.  Again, the photos on the wall were all taken on various trips to the cabin and the framed map on the shelf I printed from on-line.  It is a map of the lake on which the cabin resides.  Fun idea, right?  The only photo that is not of the cabin is the black and white collage. It is actually 3 photos; one of my dad (about 10 years old), one of my mom (about 10 years old) and one of my grandpa H.; all with stringers of fish they caught. {love} The old typewriter matched the aqua beautifully and we found that at Goodwill for $7.  It still works! BONUS!  The red lantern (one of two in the room) we purchased new from Rural King in the camping isle for $3.99.  Believe it or not, these are filled with oil and we use them during power outages and camping!  LOVE DUAL PURPOSE DECORATING!  The aqua block with the tree on it was a space-taker-upper.  We had this awkward empty space in the frames by the shelf and I needed something to put there.  I just cut a 2x4 into a square and painted it with the aqua paint left over from the art work and stamped a maroon tree on it.  Cool, funky and nature-y! (The wall color in the top left looks yellowish; it's not - just the sun was on the wall there.  The color is a mossy green like the bottom right corner shows)

This is right at the foot a AJ's bed.  He has his lego table set up here and a shelf for his knicknacks as well.  He has his own lantern and a boat paddle that my dad salvaged from the cabin.  Again, YEAH FOR FREE ART!  This fall we are going to collect a mason jar full of acorns for their shelves.  The photo in the frame (on the shelf) is going to be replaced with a "cabin picture" but I haven't done that yet.  For right now it is a beautiful picture of his little sister! ;)

Above their closet doors are old license plates that we bought at a flea market years ago.  They are funky colors and look cool so I thought I would use them. I rested them on the trim and attached a velcro sticky dot on the tops so they wouldn't fall off.

So what do you think?

That is really cute!

About Me:

I am a wife to my amazingly handsome, multi-talented, God-centered husband, Mike.  We have been married since I was just a baby after being high school sweet hearts FOREVER. The Lord has blessed us with (soon to be) 6 beautiful babies that challenge and bless us daily! I am a homeschooling mom and LOVE it!  We live on a handful of acres alongside a shallow creek and have slowly been turning a house (that we built in 2005) into a home. We have raised pigs, bees and chickens (and of course kids!) over the years.  I also love to grow and perserve my own food (there is just something about it that makes my heart smile), tackle home projects both big and small (I am a contractor's daughter), read, sew, quilt, crochet, knit and try to keep an open "Mary" home of hospitality (Luke 10:38-42).
